David F. Cottrell, age 75 of Bristol, sailed away to his next journey on April 1st, 2024 after a brief illness. David was the beloved husband of 38 years to Marie of Bristol, father to David J. Cottrell of Evansville, IN, and stepfather to Steven Narcovich (Robin) of Bristol. David also leaves his sisters Jan Lacy, Donna Macomber (Jerry) and Lori Kielbasa all of Portsmouth, and Jennifer Cabral (David) of Tiverton. He is pre-deceased by his mother Ruth and father James.
David grew up in the Common Fence Point area of Portsmouth and graduated from Portsmouth High School. His proximity to and love of the water, and his talented hands and mechanical knowledge lead to a long career as the steward of the former Point Boat Yard in Portsmouth. David also later worked for Maverick, Inc as a heavy crane operator and was proud to have contributed to the construction of many commercial buildings throughout Massachusetts.
David’s dry wit was unmatched, and he was dedicated to his family. His opinions on all things mechanical to current events and many things in between will be missed and even now more appreciated.
His funeral services will take place Monday, April 8th, 9:30 – 10:30 AM from the George C. Lima Funeral Home, 367 High Street, Bristol, RI 02809. Burial will follow in Pocasset Hill Cemetery, 44 Grinnell Avenue, Tiverton, RI 02878.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Potter League of Animals in Middletown to honor his love of animals, or to the IYRS School of Technology & Trades c/o Boatbuilding & Restoration Program of Newport so that future students can have the opportunity to learn the trade.
