Fr. Daniel Albert McGinn SSC

Fr. Daniel Albert McGinn, SSC, 91 passed away on March 6, 2019 at Saint Elizabeth Manor. He was the son of the late Albert McGinn and Kathleen Keppner.  

Fr. McGinn studied at St. Peter's Primary School, St. Peter's Junior High School and St. Francis High School. He then began study at Creighton University and in March 1944 he began serving in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in the South Pacific for three years during World War II.

He entered Columban formation and from 1948 to 1950 was at the seminary in St. Columbans NE. In 1950 he was an exchange student at St. Columban’s Seminary, Dalgan Park, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland. On his return in 1953 he went to St. Columban’s Major Seminary, Milton, MA. He was ordained on December 21, 1953 by Bishop Bernard Shiel at St. Rita's Church, Chicago.

In October 1954 Fr. McGinn went to Japan and began language study in Tokyo. He became an assistant in Odawara, Yokohama Diocese and later he was assigned as an assistant in Our Lady of Japan Church, Kumamoto Osaka Diocese.

In April 1962 he was appointed to promotion work in US and in May 1965 he was put in charge of Columban house in Houston, Texas. He was the assigned as Director of Retreats at St. Columban's Retreat House in Derby New York.

In May 1971 the Superior General appointed Dan to work in the Secretariat for Non-Christians in Rome. He was then assigned to Blessed Sacrament Parish in Westminster, CA and in July 1986 he was at St. Rita's Parish in San Diego, CA. He began serving in St. Mary's Star of the Sea, Ocean Side, CA, in October 1988.

In June 1990 he took up an assignment as an assistant in St. Euphrasia Parish in Granada Hills, CA. He moved back to the Columban house in Los Angeles in October 1997 and he became the Bursar there.

In September 2001Fr. McGinn moved to the Columban Retirement Home in Bristol, RI.

Fr. McGinn had a wide range of interests and was readily willing to start a discussion on varied topics.
