Rev. Joseph McSweeney Obituary

Rev. Joseph Jeremiah McSweeney, SSC, 85, passed away on September 13, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Manor.

 

Born in Ireland, he was the son of the late Jeremiah and Ellen (Long) McSweeney. He is survived by his brothers Daniel McSweeney and his wife Ann of Ireland, Peter McSweeney and his wife Mary of Canada and was the brother of the late Patrick, Timmy, John & Tommy McSweeney.

 

Fr. McSweeney was a graduate of De La Salle College, Macroom, Ireland and entered the St. Columbans Seminary, Navan, Ireland in 1952. He was ordained as a priest on December 21, 1958. He served mainly in Korea but also in New York and Chicago.  In 1992 he was appointed to Bristol to do Mission Education and Promotion. He helped throughout Rhode Island at many parishes, schools and religious communities including the RI Korean Catholic Community. He also ran the Mission Booth at the Columban Fathers’ Festival each year. Fr. Joe was always reaching out to those in need.

 

His funeral services will be held Friday, September 21st with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 AM at the Columban Fathers Chapel, 65 Ferry Road. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday 5 – 7 PM at the Columban Fathers Chapel, Bristol. Memorial donations in Fr. McSweeney's memory can be made to Columban Fathers, PO Box 65 Bristol RI 02809.
