Barbara Luther

Barbara Ann Luther, 85, of Bristol, RI, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at St. Anne’s Hospital on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. Barbara was the wife of the late Wilson Read Luther Sr. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Fernanda (Cardoza) Vento.

Barbara is survived by her beloved children: Rachel Carr (Tiverton) and her husband, Daniel; Mark Luther (Middletown) and his wife, Michele; Rebecca St. Vincent (Bristol); and Ruth Maiato (Little Compton) and her husband, Edmund, as well as her dear sister Pauline Ciszewski (Bristol). She was also the proud stepmother to Davin Luther and aunt to many loved nieces and nephews.

She leaves behind a proud, strong legacy within her grandchildren: Wilson Luther III (Scituate), Samantha Luther (Boston), Hannah Carr (Tiverton), Alan St. Vincent(Bristol), Matthew Maiato (Little Compton), Emma Mitchell (Somerset), Sarah McCollum (Coventry), Madisyn Cruz (North Kingstown), Kathryn Maiato (Little Compton), Evan Luther (Middletown), Andrew Maiato (Little Compton), Emily Maiato (Little Compton), Liam Dugan, Jr. (Bristol), and Hayden Luther (Middletown); and her great-grandchildren: Brayden St. Vincent (Bristol), Ivy McCollum (Coventry), Colson McCollum (Coventry), and Charlie Cruz (North Kingstown).

Barbara was predeceased by her stepchildren: Roberta Luther, Wilson Luther, Jr., Charles Luther, and Gardner Luther; and her grandchildren: Brandon Luther and Paul Maiato.

A founding member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Bristol Fire Department, Barbara was a proud Bristolian and an active member of the First Baptist Church. Barbara was the epitome of a matriarch, always keeping an open door, welcoming all who needed a safe place to land. Her home was especially welcoming during the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving, where she enjoyed hosting these family traditions. Barbara loved the History Channel, getting lost in a good mystery novel, word searches, jigsaw puzzles, good card game with her family, and spending time with her favorite cat, Rory, AKA BrokenTail.

The funeral services will take place on Saturday, July 20th, 9-9:30AM, at the George C. Lima Funeral Home, 367 High Street, followed by a Christian Memorial Service, 10 AM at the First Baptist Church, 250 High Street. Following will be a procession to North Burial Ground, where Barbara will be laid to rest next to her late husband and grandchild.

Barbara’s children will host a wake on Friday, July 19th, 4-8 PM, at the George C. Lima Funeral Home.
