David Smith Obituary

David Warren Smith, age 72, sailed away to his next adventure on May 24, 2024. He was born to the late Maurice and Sarah (Church) Smith III on February 14, 1952. David was raised in Bristol and met his wife of 47 years, Constance (Connie) Day Smith, at the Bristol Yacht Club. He also leaves behind his beloved daughters Heather C. Zoller and her husband Mark of Bristol, Laura D. Jamross and her husband Tyler of Millis and his beautiful new grandson Jackson David Jamross. His siblings Maurice (Colby) Smith IV of Swansea, Stephen Smith of Mattapoisett and Susan Terhune of Barrington will remember their youngest brother affectionately.

Before David resided in Tiverton for over 40 years, he graduated from Bristol High School in 1970, attended West Virginia University, spent time in California and summers working on Block Island. After his education, David became a self-taught, world-renowned scrimshaw artist. His motivation to launch his career stemmed from his experiences with boating in his home waters of Rhode Island. Other passions included photography and music; he was fond of Italian food, garden-grown tomatoes, any activity involving the ocean and being with his family. David and Connie spent countless days on the beach searching for sea glass with their loyal companion, a black lab named Tilly. While David impacted so many people with his huge heart and incredible artistic talent, he always remained humble. He was thoughtful, giving and his sense of humor was unmatched - he will be missed tremendously.

The family is planning a celebration of life to be held in his favorite month of September, date and details to be determined.

David was an animal lover all of his life; in lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the National Marine Life Center in Buzzards Bay, MA: https://nmlc.org/donate/
