Gilbert Soares Almeida, 92, of Mulberry Road passed away on March 8, 2020 at the Rhode Island Veterans Home. He was the husband of Madeline (Metthe) Almeida.
Born in Somerset MA, he was the son of the late Augusto and Evarista (Calisto) Almeida. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Nancy Cabral and her husband William, Sandra Almeida, Susan O’Brien and her husband Russell, Gilbert Almeida and his wife Claudette, Connie Silva and her husband Michael, Steven Almeida and John Almeida; 15 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. He is survived by his brother Joseph Almeida and was the grandfather of the late Sarah Medina. He was predeceased by his sisters Mary Soares and Theresa Lopes and brothers August, Edward, Arthur and Benjamin Almeida.
Mr. Almeida was educated in Bristol and served in the US Navy during World War II. He was employed by Kaiser for 30 years before retiring and then worked with his son at Gilbert’s Auto Service for 30 years. Mr. Almeida was the past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 379 and a former Manager for the Bristol Little League as well as Coach for the Bristol Pop Warner League. He enjoyed horse racing, dog racing and was a New York Yankees fan. He was an avid card player who loved to bring home animals for his wife to take care of. Mr. Almeida was honored to spend the last six months of his life at the Veterans Home.
His funeral services will be held Friday, March 13th,9 AM from the George Lima Funeral Home 367 High Street with a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 AM at St. Mary of the Bay Church 645 Main Street, Warren. Burial with Military Honors follow in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery.
