Gregorio Avila, 93, of Highview Drive, passed away on May 29, 2025, at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Maria Bernadette (Silveira) Avila, whom he was married to for 72 years.
Born in Castello Branco, Faial, Azores, he was the son of Jose and Filomena Avila. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son: Antonio “Tony” (Adeline) Avila of Bristol; grandchildren: Brian A. (Edeline) Avila and Krystal (Ross) Pickett; and great-grandchildren: Ross A. Pickett, Jr., Calvin F. Pickett, Lauren M. Avila, and Bryson A. Avila.
He was predeceased by his siblings: Jose Avila, Silvino Avila, Maria Hermina Braia, Ines Vargas, Manuel Avila, Francisco Avila, Ester Teixeira, and Antonio Avila.
Mr. Avila was educated in Portugal. He was employed by Mt. Hope Builders in Bristol, RI for over 20 years as a foundation builder, as well as Direcktor Shipyard in Middletown, RI for over 10 years. Mr. Avila was a past member of the Bristol Sports Club, as well as the past president and supreme president of the Fundacao Beneficiente Faialense. He was involved in the past Holy Trinity of St. Elizabeth’s Church and was a devout parishioner. He was an avid Benefica soccer fan and known for his Holy Ghost soup.
His funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 8:30 – 10:30 AM from the George C. Lima Funeral Home, 367 High Street, with a Mass of Christian Burial, 11 AM at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood Street. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
