Humberto “Herb” Duarte Carreiro, 94, of Bristol RI, passed away on April 13, 2026 at home in the care of his family.
Born on July 19, 1931, in Pico da Pedra, São Miguel, Azores, he was the son of Jose Duarte Carreiro and Maria Jose Calisto. Herb was the beloved husband of the late Lillian Furtado Motta.
He leaves a daughter, Susan Hannifan (Gary) of Palmyra, Virginia; two sons: August Carreiro of Jupiter, Florida, and Herbert Carreiro (Ann) of Warren RI; and a granddaughter Ashley Marie Carreiro of Kaneohe, Hawaii.
Herb was the last surviving member of his family. He was the brother of the late Joseph D. Carreiro, Arthur D Carreiro and August D Carreiro.
He immigrated to the United States at age 17 and was employed by PF Industries, Converse and later Bristol Medical Associates of RI where he retired after over 30 years as head of maintenance.
One of his proudest accomplishments was that he was a past president of the Portuguese Beneficial Association Dom Luiz Filipe where he served during their 75th anniversary in 1967. To celebrate this milestone, he hosted the Portuguese Ambassador at the time, and his wife in Bristol.
An amateur historian Herb wrote many articles and a booklet about the Portuguese and Spanish Jews in America. He believed they played important roles in forming this country.
He loved to do research and wrote a publication about Monticello and the Levy family, as well as The Curious Facts of RI and his theory of how Wampanoag Chief Metacomet came to be called King Philip.
Herb was an avid gardener and lived independently until his passing.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, April 20, 10 AM at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood Street. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
