John Enos Obituary

John Anthony Enos, 90, of Cottage Street, peacefully passed away early morning on Saturday, May 18th at home. He was the husband of Dorothy Enos.

Born at home in Providence, John was the son of the late John “Jack” and Mary (Serpa) Enos. John grew up in Providence and East Providence before moving to Warren during his high school years. He graduated in 1953 from Warren High School. After graduating he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Iceland.

John met the love of his life, Dorothy Correira, at dances, roller skating in Warren and Crescent Park. He was a natural dancer who could waltz the night away. John and Dorothy married and had two children, Donald and Shirley. They bought an old “fixer upper” on Cottage Street that kept John busy with repairs and remodeling of an over 100-year-old house.

John was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He had a big heart and always made time to help or fix anything needed. He was a great, involved grandfather. He would walk the grandchildren into town, bringing them to the playgrounds and parks along the way. John was quite athletic, he taught himself how to ski after watching his grandchildren on the mountain.

John was a craftsman at heart. He refinished furniture, caned chairs in his cellar “cave”. Many of his pieces are in his home on Cottage Street. In the early 70’s, John made two wooden skiffs, one about 20ft and another about 16 ft. He used them to quahog on the bay and the smaller one for his son to use. John would take his family camping on Prudence Island by boat, spending the weekend near Nag Creek. A few years later, they purchased a cabin on Hog Island, spending summer weekends with family and friends water skiing, clamming, and fishing.

John worked at several local factories: Smith’s, Converse, Raytheon in Portsmouth, and the Department of Public Works in Bristol, cleaning the police department building. John had a strong work ethic in everything he did. He was a patient, loving, and kind person to all who knew him. He leaves Dorothy, his wife of 69 years, his daughter Shirley Gaudreau and her husband Marc; grandchildren Donald Enos, Natasha Enos and her fiancé Faycal Slaoui, Hannah Gaudreau; and great grandchildren Isaiah, Domenic, and Deana.

John was pre-deceased by his son Donald Enos, and sisters Clara Greenwell and Pam Faria.
