Jose A. Guedes, 79, of Bristol, passed away on November 28, 2024, peacefully at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of the late Adelia (Capela) Guedes. December would have marked their 55-year wedding anniversary.
Born in Horta, Faial, Azores, he was the son of the late Jose B. and Manuela (Avila) Guedes. He is survived by: his children, Rui “Roy” Guedes of Bristol, Ana and her husband Bernard Salmon of Sarasota, FL, Tanya and her husband Sean Gustafson of Bristol. After losing his wife Adelia, the greatest gift to Jose were his beautiful granddaughters: 7-year-old Clara Salmon and 2-year-old Ella Gustafson. He leaves behind 3 siblings: sister Madalena Baptista of Providence, and 2 brothers, Orlando Guedes of Bristol and Ildafonso “Al” Guedes of Pawtucket; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Guedes was educated in Portugal. While in Portugal he was employed as a journalist for a printing newspaper company in Faial. In the United States he was employed as a finish carpenter in the boat industry for Pearson Yachts for 15 years, and later employed by the St. Elizabeth’s School before retirement. Jose Guedes had a love for music and was an amazing drummer. He also enjoyed watching soccer and was a Porto fan. He was always a big jokester and enjoyed making people laugh.
His funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 4th, 9:30 – 10:30 AM from the George C. Lima Funeral Home, 367 High Street, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 11 AM at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood Street. Burial will follow in North Burial Ground located on Colt State Park grounds.
