Manuel R. Gonçalves, 86, of Bristol, died on Sunday, October 29, 2023. He was born on August 30, 1937, in the beautiful island of Madeira, Portugal. He was the eldest son of Manuel Vicente and Maria Gonçalves.
He moved with his family to the United States and settled in Bristol in March of 1969. While in the United States, he worked for Pearson Yachts, Albin Manufacturing, Dunkin' Donuts, and the job he loved most was in the produce department of the Stop & Shop in Bristol.
He was a member of St. Elizabeth's Church in Bristol, Club Madeirense, S.S. Sacramento in New Bedford, and was associated for many years with the Grupo Folclorico Madeirense, S.S. Sacramento. He loved to travel and spend time with his family and friends.
Mr. Gonçalves is survived by his wife, the love of his life for over 60 years, Dora; his loving daughter Isabel Daniels and her husband John; his beloved grandson Ryan and his fianceé Alexandra Aguiar; sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and his godchildren. Also surviving is his beloved caregiver, Mary Glazier, and his many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Lourenço Gonçalves and Antonio Silvestre Gonçalves.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 2nd, 9 AM at the George C. Lima Funeral Home, 367 High Street, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 11 AM at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood Street. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
