Maria dosAnjos (Carreiro deAlmeida) Calisto, 86, of Church Street passed away on June 3, 2020 at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of the late Guilherme Calisto.
Born in Pico da Pedra, St. Michael, Azores, Portugal she was the daughter of the late Manuel deAlmeida Moniz and Maria das Mercês Carreiro. She was the mother of Susan Calisto of Warren and Louise Calisto of Bristol. Maria is also survived by her brother Jose Carreiro deAlmeida and sister Maria Luisa Carreiro deAlmeida both of Ponta Delgada, St. Michael as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Calisto was educated in Portugal and upon coming to the United States, was employed for 20 years as a machine operator for both Premiere Thread and American Tourister. She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church and a member of the church’s choir and Holy Rosary Society. Mrs. Calisto enjoyed attending all of the festivals held at the church and was devoted to the Holy Ghost and Divine Mercy.
As an avid collector of recipes Maria loved to cook and bake. She took great joy in giving away all of her delicious creations to her family and friends to enjoy. Known for her “Green Thumb,” she was always surrounded by beautiful plants and flowers. Her positive disposition and generosity will be missed by all.
Maria felt indebted to Dr. David Leibowitz for the attention and care he always gave to her. The family extends on her behalf, a sincere thank you to Dr. Leibowitz and Amy Davock.
Calling hours are Monday, June 8th 9 – 10:30 AM at the George Lima Funeral Home 367 High Street followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 11 AM at St. Elizabeth’s Church 577 Wood Street. Burial will follow in North Burial Ground. Please note that guidelines for social distancing and mask use will be followed.
