Maria Gomes Moreira

Maria Gomes Moreira, 96, formerly of Wood Street, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, at Grace Barker Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Manuel Alves Moreira. They would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on July 19th.

Born in Fornelo, Vila Do Conde, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Camilo and Maria Lucinda (Lima) Gomes. Maria is survived by: her daughters Mary Moreira of Bristol and Wendy Moreira Luther of Kentucky; grandchildren: Amanda Harvey and her partner Joseph Moniz, Alexandria Luther and her partner Devin James Bays, and David Luther; and great-grandchildren: Joseph Manuel Moniz IV, Mia Marie Moniz, and Lilly Alyssa Bays.

She was predeceased by: her niece Jacqueline Harvey; and brothers: Alfredo Ferreira Gomes, José Ferreira Gomes, Manuel Ferreira Gomes, Antonio Ferreira Gomes and Camilo Ferreira Gomes

Mrs. Moreira was educated in Portugal. She studied to be a seamstress. She and her family emigrated to the United States in 1966 and settled in Bristol, Rhode Island, where she took care of her home and children. She was a longtime parishioner of Saint Elizabeth Church and a member of the St. Elizabeth’s Church adult choir which brought her great joy!

Maria was a woman of great faith. She had a great devotion to our Lady of Fatima whose shrine she visited on numerous occasions, even taking her infant daughter of  four months to the shrine.

Maria came from a musical family. When she was young, she and her five brothers would play a variety of musical instruments. Maria had a beautiful voice and she could often be heard singing as she prepared meals and cared for her family.

Her funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 9, 8:30 – 9:30 AM from the George C. Lima Funeral Home, 367 High Street, with a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 AM at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood Street. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
