Virginia Mendes (Castro) da Camara, 89, of Patterson Avenue passed away on January 11, 2023 at home, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late John N. da Camara, her beloved husband to whom she had been married for 65 years before his recent passing.
Born in Porto Santo, Madeira, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Francisco and Maria Jose (Mendes) Castro. She is survived by her children: Maria (James) Camara of Warwick, Nelson Camara of Warren, Liz Agostinelli (the late Joseph) of Barrington, Joel (Jacqueline) Camara of Warren; granddaughters Alexandria (Gerard) Connelly and Dr. Emma Kate Camara. Mrs. Camara was predeceased by her siblings Maria Camacho, Joao Castro, Bella Camara, Domingos Castro, Gustao Castro and Gabriel Castro.
Mrs. Camara was educated in Portugal and employed by Carol Cable for many years before retiring. She was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church and her Christian faith was a cornerstone of Virginia’s life. Her daily participation in the 7 pm televised masses never wavered over many years.
Her other virtues included, cooking, just ask anyone lucky enough to taste those codfish cakes or malassadas. Likewise, gardening was a favorite pastime with floral beauty on display both in and out of the house. She excelled most of all in kindness, dispensed in particular to those two granddaughters, but in large portions to all of us. It was what she did best.
Her funeral services will be held Tuesday January 17th, 9 AM from the George Lima Funeral Home, 367 High Street with a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 500 Metacom Avenue, Warren RI. Burial will follow in St. Jean the Baptiste Cemetery in Warren.
Calling hours are Monday, 4-7 PM.
Memorial donations may be made to: American Heart Association, 1 State Street, Unit 200, Providence, RI 02908.
