Walter Thomas Newman

Walter T. Newman, 66, formerly of Franklin Court Assisted Living and Constitution Street, passed away on May 15, 2023, at Silver Creek Rehab and Healthcare Center.  He was the husband of Donna M. (Gunn) Newman.  

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Walter and Barbara (Sutton) Newman. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his siblings: Kathleen (Gilbert Medeiros) Newman of Narragansett, William (Kathy) Newman of Warren; nieces and nephews: Caitlin, Michael, Kelly, David, Christina, John, Suzanna, Timothy, William Patrick, and Audrey; grand-nieces and nephews: Angelina, Carmine, Keeran, Anisa, Rohan, Eliana, Arislan, and Caroline; many cousins as well as childhood and longtime friend Norman Swift of Swansea.

Walter graduated from East Providence High School in 1975 where he was an all-state golfer. He was a student at Providence College before his life-changing motor vehicle accident.  He worked as a custodian for the Bristol Post Office for 17 years before retiring due to health issues. Prior to his accident, Walter was an avid golfer, a Burke Caddy Scholar and a member of Segregansett Country Club.  He was a longtime member of the Cup Defenders. Walter loved sweets and all things Bristol.

Walter had an uncanny knack for disarming people with his charm and unassuming manner.  His life holds many lessons for us.  He chose to rise above his daily discomforts and challenges, forgetting about himself and focusing on bringing light and joy to everyone who knew him.

His funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 23rd from 8:30 to 9:30 AM from the George Lima Funeral Home, 367 High Street with a Mass of Christian Burial, 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State Street. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence. Calling hours are respectfully omitted.
